 
Over 1,100 acres of unspoilt largely mountainous terrain, the Great Blasket Island is approximately 4 miles long by 1/2 a mile wide.
The old village above the Trá Bán (White Strand) is situated on the north-eastern side of the island, facing the mainland and Slea Head.

Occupied from pre-history, the island overlooks the location where a number of the Spanish Armada ships were wrecked.
The small farming / fishing community exceeded 150 in the early 20th century but had dwindled to a small number when the island was vacated in 1953.
The island has considerable literary acclaim because of the unique writings by a number of islanders.

Simple accommodation in 5 restored houses at the top of the village.
Availability depends on dates: we find that Saturday nights are busy and need to be booked well in advance, also for July and August it is safer to book well in advance.
